Medication changed me from A worry-wort to FEARLESS. Help?

I was put on Paxil for panic attacks. I noticed now I dont have Anxiety at all, but im also NEVER SCARED. Can't that be kinda dangerous? Im acually worried about not worrying, how crazy is that? I used to worry about everything now I dont worry about anything. It kinda freaks me out because lets say I was walking on the street and someone held a gun to my head I would probally just laugh in there face and go on with my business. But besides not being scared, I can never be sad, never be REALLY happy, im just flat or something. Is this normal?
Answer:
I completely understand what you are saying. Often anti-depressants and anti-anxiety meds make you feel like you feel nothing at all. You may not feel bad, but you can't really feel happy either or seem to care about anything. Unfortunately I think it's a normal reaction to the meds. I mean they are doing what they are supposed to by taking away the panic attacks, you just have to weigh the pros and cons - which is worse, the panic attacks or the not feeling anything? FYI, I am not giving drug advice, but I take Lexapro (for panic attacks) and I do not have that side effect with it and I have had it with others. You might want to consider talking to you doctor about switching from Paxil.
Likely the gun wielding crimal would figure out you were insane or more dangerous than he was for ignoring him. Fear is what drives crime.

Learn self defense and if you are not scared you will win every fight that is hurled upon you.
Go see a psychiatrist and medical provider.

They are the only ones who know how seriously you need this medicine. Then, see another person to get a second opinion.

No one on this site is a doctor.
Talk to your doctor to find out if this is normal. Maybe they can lower the dose just a bit so your feelings will be somewhere in between.
You are taking a drug that messes with your brain chemistry. Drugs don't differentiate between normal fear or irrational panic. Drugs don't differentiate between joy, sadness, fear--- drugs kill ALL emotions. Look, you're basically high right now.--just because it comes from a doctor doesn't mean it doesn't get you high.
Of course it's not normal! You're high on prescription drugs that, like street drugs, change your mood.
Will it change? No. As long as you're on Paxil, you will feel very little. (Christmas is going to be very flat. You'll have to force yourself to make "happy noises" like a normal person, but you won't feel it.)
You might also find yourself lacking impulse control-- you might be "cool" with anything and everything, and lose any sense of "smarts" you had about situations and people. You might find you lack good judgment because you're so high, nothing bothers you.
Watch how your attitude changes about food-- see if you can stop eating. Watch your money--- you might not be able to say no to spending. If you're single, be careful who you get involved with--you might tolerate bad treatment because you don't "feel" how badly you're being treated.

As for suicide-- look, your brain has been chemically altered. Suicide "seems" like a good idea. It's not about being sad/depressed and killing yourself, it's about not having any sense of control, or normal emotions, or being able to think things through. You don't FEEL the impact of what you're doing. It has little to do with being depressed- it's about not feeling, and not having impusle control.
Please, speak to your doctor about this. It seems evident to me, that you need a smaller dosage each day. Paxil CR, Paxil, even the generic Paxil comes in many dosages, and you would certainly SEEM to benefit, greatly, by telling your doctor your fears. I DO understand, when you say you fear not fearing! Certainly, you could have great harm come to you by not having normal fears. Your panic attacks may have seemed to justify your first prescribed dosage. Now, it appears that you need less, and that is a GOOD thing. So, let your doctor be aware of how you feel. You can keep the anxiety attacks away with less paxil, now. Just let the Dr.. understand this, and I am sure the Dr. will be delighted to put you on a prescription for a lighter amount.
This sounds crazy - but sometimes medications - even anti-depressants - can give depression symptoms. Not feeling fear is almost a form of depression or "flat affect" - where you don't feel as you should, even "negatively".

You may also be on too much of a dosage. Every person's biochemistry is different and people can react differently to medication. Maybe you're especially sensitive to Paxil and you need to be on a lower dosage or a different anti-anxiety medication.

Fear is a cautionary reflex and it's a survival mechanism - it's different when it becomes dread and it becomes paralyzing, like in a panic attack. But fear is a natural reaction and to have it taken from you is possibly as bad as having fear all the time. I hope this helps!
