Medication for depression question?

My friend is on celexa, about 30mg a day. He has been on it for about a year now. But feels he is worse when on pills, and i agree. The docs would not let him get off of them, they also would not write a note for work explaning he could not work due too illness. My friend wants to be pill free, so a few weeks ago, he took himself off of them, without the docs permission, he weaned himself, and detoxed for a few days. He feels and looks so much better now..but was this safe for him too do?? He says he got really dizzy when he went off of them, but its getting better for him. He just does not trust doctors now adays. When he was diganosed with depression, the only test they did was a throyroid test, thats it! and than threw him on pills right away, which i think is bull, its too easy for docs to write a perscription, and its not good, too many pills and chemicals, they should really do more testing. I just hope he did the right thing.
Answer:
Doctors are far too eager to hand out pills! He should try and get a different doctor ASAP, or the professional advice of perhaps a pyschologist/psychiatrist?
It is not a good idea to cut cold turkey. It cam cause him to be really moody and very dizzy. But since it's been a few weeks now, just don't worry about it.
Doc's don't usually give anti depressants for no reason, he musta told the dr about him feeling down alot and tired alot, which is a abnormal thyroid symptom.
There is no real test for depression, and since the thyroid test came back good, the dr. was thinking he was depressed.
PLEASE tell your friend to be careful. There is the possibility of your friend going into a major depression relapse when taken off of meds. I would suggest your friend find another doctor and get a second opinion. There are other medications that he could take that wont have the side effects of the one he was on. It's better to be on meds (even if you dont want to be) than to have a relapse and end up committing suicide.
You don't say how old your friend is. It does make a diff. because if he is a teen, teens have adverse reactions to antidepressants. Your friend needs to see another Dr. But I know you said he doesn't trust Drs. now. They don't use blood test to determine depression. I do feel like people can always use counseling along with medication, however. Please just watch your friend.
